The young crew bravely threw their inhibitions, and often their dignity, overboard in this raucous and imaginative retelling. The original plot is here the play-within-a-play, which focuses the company’s attempt to stage the adventure story. With cross-dressing, prop problems, cast squabbling and punning worthy of The Goon Show , Treasure Island becomes something of a summer pantomime. While the sense of humour and occasionally manic direction may not be to everyone’s taste it is hard not to be infected by the exuberance of the cast. It is to the credit of the company that each member performed with the same level of enthusiasm whether they were playing a main character or a piece of furniture. With such a colourful and magnetic set of characters it was as well that the cast were unencumbered by elaborate set design, sustaining the attention of a regularly laughing audience. In particular, Long John Silver (Jordan Kouame) and Captain Smollett (Chante Faucher) maintained an impressive level of maturity and professionalism which allowed for their characters’ depth and individuality, producing some genuinely affecting moments.
